FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
- What is this all about? This is a 5-day exploration of the Hudson Valley traveling under your own power on the water in your own craft to find all that the culture of the area has. Natural beauty, environmental engagement and cultural immersion will be a plenty.
- How much experience is required? This trip is for levels of experience novice to experienced. Any previous paddling experience will be beneficial. The more efficient you are, the stronger you’ll feel. Your trained and seasoned guides will be with you all the way through to help you continually improve your movement.
- Do I need to be in great shape? A level of stamina will be required to see it through. We will be averaging 15 miles of paddling per day over approximately 5-6 hours. This is comparable to hiking with a 10lb backpack for the same duration, not intensely strenuous. It will require determination at times however. If you are capable of a few hours of moderate exercise each day we expect you will be fine. Kayaking requires general good health. Sometimes a high wind or current will require an extra push. An adventurous spirit is perfect for this trip.
- I want to come and I want to prepare for the paddling portion, what should I do? With registration you will receive credit to come paddle with us on a day tour or within a class. We highly encourage you to take advantage of the opportunity. Additionally, the more time you can spend on the water the better for your general well being, exposure in nature, and conditioning for the 5-day trip. We offer many ways for you to do this - take a class, join tours, grab a season’s pass. If you're not a local you can find a local trusted paddling outfitter to facilitate. - Who else will be there? Adventurous and curious travelers just like you. Camaraderie is key part of the experience. It is not necessary to come with a friend as you will leave with many!

- What will we be doing off the water? This is a cultural and nature-related experience. Think of this trip as much about your journey on the water as it is about experiencing each Hudson Valley location. This world renowned region has a bounty of experiences waiting for you. You will have hours each afternoon and every evening to discover and embrace the culture. We will have opportunities for you to join organized engagements as well.

- How will I be able to explore on land? We will have a shuttle that will transport you to town centers and other places of interest.
- Do I need to know all about our route? No, this is a guided trip. Your instructor/guide will have each day’s planned route managed so you can enjoy the environment and experience.
- Who are my guides? Your guides are enthusiastic outdoor leaders who love exploring and sharing. Each has trained for years as kayak instructors. A fun loving attitude is universal.
- How will I manage my luggage on this trip? Prior to the trip you will receive a duffle bag from us to pack for the trip. Being summer time, packing light can be easier. We’ll carry your duffle, tent, and cot/mat with the land crew. Additional items or anything you want during the day should be carried in your kayak.
- Will my stuff get wet? It is always possible during a water sport but we’ll supply a dry bag for your use, you may bring more dry bags if you have them. We have a selection in our shop to bolster your kit if you need any.
- Are there any age requirements? Minimum participation age is 16 with an accompanying adult or anyone over the age of 18.
- How stable are the kayaks? Our kayaks are quite stable. There is a minimal risk of capsizing. This usually only occurs in an unusual circumstance. When it does the on-water instructor guides will get you back paddling again in no time. For most paddlers it becomes a fun part of the day and is known to happen on purpose - within safe practices.
- What happens if my kayak flips over? Our guides are highly skilled at performing recoveries and will quickly get you back in your kayak. We’ll share with you the tips on how to recover on your own after an inadvertent swim or how to assist another.
- Can I learn kayaking skills on this trip? Absolutely! Your guide will provide instructional tips along the way and they are always ready to talk technique. In addition, we will have scheduled skill sessions and/or demonstrations throughout the week for you to join so you may grab a tool for your skills toolbox.
- What if the weather turns bad? Will I be comfortable and warm? August in New York is quite warm. The water temperature will be in the 70s. Evenings can get chilly so we recommend layers. Please see "What to Pack" for more information about suggested clothing.
- What will we eat? HRE has our own mobile kitchen. The talented chefs from Stock Up will accompany us on our journey and will provide fresh and delicious breakfasts, lunches, and dinners. Please let us know your food restrictions and we will work to accommodate them. Here is a sample menu.
- Will you accommodate my dietary restrictions? Please let us know if you have any food restrictions so we can try. We’ll be cooking for many and will be prepared to handle most common diets.
- What will the camp set up look like? We will be camping along the Hudson River Greenway Water Trail. Each night will be spent along the Hudson River. Our waterfront locations each night will keep us in tune with the water. The infrastructure will consist of a 24’, center of camp, kitchen trailer with community postings, information gathering opportunity, and power and water source. Common area tents for sun shade and/or rain protection will serve as relaxing space to kick back in a chair to read a book, or enjoy a view or a discussion. Your sleeping tent will be your space to retreat to when it is time to rest for the next day’s paddling and exploration.
- Where do we wash? Are there toilets? Some of our camp locations will have access to traditional toilets and/or we will have porto-san toilets and hand-washing station brought in. We will have options for a showers along the way.
- If I would like to tip the guides, what is the industry standard? If you would like to tip our guides they would be most appreciative. The industry standard is 10-15% of the trip cost but any amount will be enthusiastically accepted. Outside magazine has this informative article about guide tipping.
- What if I get sick or injured? The trip plan will be developed with emergency action plans to manage challenges, if they arise. The proper course of action will be followed within the staff’s Wilderness First Aid and CPR training to assist you take care of minor events. Should you require more care we’ll expedite aid from nearby services or within major population centers.
- What about my valuables? This is a casual adventure outside on a river environment, simple is great. Wallets, phones, etc should be securely packed in dry bags when on the water and kept in your possession at all times.
